Modular Kitchen Materials: Plywood vs MDF vs HDHMR, and Granite vs Quartz

A modular kitchen faces water, heat, steam, oil and daily wear. The core board material decides whether it lasts fifteen years or swells up in three. Here is how the main options compare, along with the countertop decision.

Cabinet core materials

MaterialMoisture resistanceStrengthBest use
BWP / marine plywoodExcellentHigh, holds screws wellSink unit, base cabinets
MR plywoodModerateGoodWall cabinets away from water
HDHMR boardGoodDense and stableShutters and cabinets, popular modern choice
MDFPoor unless specially treatedSmooth, weaker screw holdingDry areas, decorative shutters
Particle boardPoorLowBudget furniture, not ideal for kitchens
Rule of thumb: use boiling-water-proof (BWP) plywood for the sink cabinet and base units. That is where water damage almost always starts.

Shutter finishes

  • Laminate: durable, affordable, many colours and textures.
  • Acrylic: high-gloss, modern look, shows scratches more.
  • PU paint: smooth premium finish, costlier.
  • Veneer: real wood look, needs care around moisture.

Countertops: granite vs quartz

Granite suits Indian cooking with high heat and heavy utensils, which is why it remains very popular. Quartz gives a cleaner, uniform look and is very easy to maintain.

Small details that matter

  • Use stainless steel or soft-close branded hardware. Cheap hinges fail first.
  • Edge-band all exposed board edges to keep moisture out.
  • Leave the chimney and hob positions planned before tiling.
  • Provide enough sockets above the counter for appliances.

Frequently asked questions

Is HDHMR better than plywood?

HDHMR is dense, smooth and moisture resistant, and works very well for many kitchen parts. BWP plywood remains the safest choice for the sink area.

How long does a modular kitchen last?

With good materials and hardware, often 10 to 15 years or more. Water damage and cheap hinges are the usual reasons for early replacement.
