False ceilings hide beams, wiring and AC ducts, allow cove lighting and give rooms a finished look. In India, the choice is usually between traditional POP (plaster of Paris) work and gypsum board systems. Both can look excellent. They differ in how they are built.
| POP ceiling | Gypsum board ceiling | |
|---|---|---|
| How it is made | POP powder mixed with water on site and applied over a mesh and frame | Factory-made boards screwed to a metal frame |
| Speed | Slower, needs drying time | Faster installation |
| Mess on site | More dust and wet work | Cleaner |
| Curves and designs | Very flexible for intricate shapes | Best for straight lines and simple curves |
| Finish quality | Depends heavily on the craftsman | More consistent |
| Repairs | Patch repairs possible | Damaged boards can be cut out and replaced |
Common concerns
- Moisture: both suffer if water leaks from above. Fix roof and bathroom leaks first. Use moisture-resistant boards in humid areas.
- Cracks: joints between boards need proper taping and jointing compound. Poor jointing shows up as hairline cracks.
- Height: a false ceiling lowers room height. Keep enough clear height so rooms do not feel cramped and fans have clearance.
- Access: leave access panels near AC units, junction boxes and pipes.
Do false ceilings make rooms cooler?
The air gap above a false ceiling adds some insulation under a hot roof slab, especially if insulation material is laid on top of the ceiling. On top floors, combine it with a cool roof coating for the best effect.
Frequently asked questions
Can I hang a fan from a false ceiling?
No. Fans and heavy lights must hang from hooks fixed in the concrete slab above, passing through the false ceiling.
Which lasts longer?
Both can last many years if kept dry and installed properly. The frame quality and workmanship matter more than the material.
