OPC vs PPC vs PSC Cement: Which Should You Use for Your House?

Walk into any cement shop and you will be asked: OPC or PPC? 43 grade or 53? The choice affects strength, durability, cracking and even how long you need to cure. Here is what each type means and where it fits best.

TypeWhat it isStrengthsBest for
OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement), 43 and 53 gradePure clinker and gypsumFast early strength, quicker formwork removalRCC work where early strength matters, precast elements
PPC (Portland Pozzolana Cement)OPC blended with fly ashLower heat, denser concrete over time, better durability, often cheaperMost house construction, plaster, masonry, foundations
PSC (Portland Slag Cement)OPC blended with blast-furnace slagGood resistance to sulphates and chloridesCoastal areas, marine and sewage works, aggressive soils

What the grade number means

For OPC, the grade is the minimum strength in N/mm² that standard mortar cubes must reach at 28 days. OPC 53 reaches higher strength sooner than OPC 43. Higher grade does not automatically mean better for every job. It generates more heat as it sets, which can increase shrinkage cracking in plaster and thin elements if curing is poor.

Why many engineers prefer PPC for houses

The fly ash in PPC reacts slowly with by-products of cement hydration, filling pores and making concrete denser and less permeable with time. That means better long-term durability and less heat during setting. The trade-off is slower early strength, so PPC concrete needs longer curing, at least 10 days, and formwork may need to stay a little longer.

Which to use where

  • Foundations, plinth and masonry: PPC works well.
  • Columns, beams and slabs: OPC 43 or 53, or PPC, as specified by your structural engineer.
  • Plaster and brickwork mortar: PPC, which reduces cracking.
  • Coastal or salty soil: PSC or PPC, with good cover to steel.

Buying tips

  • Check the week and year of manufacture printed on the bag. Fresher is better.
  • Look for the ISI mark and the relevant Indian Standard on the bag.
  • Store bags on a raised platform, away from walls, covered, and stack no more than about 10 high.
  • Use older stock first.

Frequently asked questions

Is PPC weaker than OPC?

PPC gains strength more slowly, but given proper curing it reaches comparable strength over time and often better durability.

Can I mix OPC and PPC in one pour?

It is best avoided. Use one type consistently within a structural element.
